Jefferson Animal Hospital and Regional Emergency Center & Jefferson Animal Hospital Fern Creek
Jefferson Animal Hospital and Regional Emergency Center is a 24 hour emergency and trauma center. We are fully equipped to handle any type of pet emergency 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Because we handle emergencies and trauma cases, difficult internal medicine cases and preventative care, each of our staff members must go through rigorous training to enable them to handle any pet health concern that an owner might have.
Jefferson Animal Hospital Fern Creek is primarily a preventative healthcare hospital that is fully equipped to handle all types of routine pet care and emergencies. Pets that are in need of 24 hour monitoring and extended hospitalization are transferred to our emergency center. We spend time with our clients teaching them about proper diet, housing and care of birds, reptiles, pocket pets, rabbits, ferrets and more. With the wide variety of pet care that we provide between both hospitals, we feel that our staff obtains the most thorough preparation by completing comprehensive training at our Outer Loop hospital first, followed by training at our Fern Creek location.
Cross Training - We expect that all members of our staff be well versed in all areas of training at both locations. Once you are fully trained at both locations and in all areas, we will try to schedule you based on your preferences. We do however ask that you be willing to pitch in to help during times when other staff may be ill or on vacation. Flexibility and willingness to pitch in are valuable assets.
Registered Veterinary Technician – Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVT) are a vital part of our health care team. As highly trained and educated staff members, we rely on them to take care of our critically ill hospitalized patients and assist our doctors in surgery. In addition, they provide direction and leadership to our veterinary assistant staff. All of our RVTs play a critical role at both of our locations by maintaining the very strict, high standards mandated by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA).
Receptionist/Triage Nurse – Our receptionists do much more than answer our 8 line telephone system. They are trained with the knowledge that enables them to properly answer telephone questions and triage pets that come to our hospital for treatment. They are also trained in preventative veterinary care. This includes an extensive knowledge of the vaccinations we recommend, preventative care testing, senior pet wellness care, nutrition information and much, much more. Our Fern Creek receptionists must additionally be well versed in husbandry.
Both of our hospitals utilize veterinary specific database software to process our appointments, create medical records, print client educational information, process invoices for clients and to complete many other necessary tasks.
Our receptionists must also have exceptional people skills. When clients enter our facility, they are often nervous or upset about their pet’s medical condition. The receptionist must have the ability to put the client at ease, gain his or her trust and help the client understand the pet’s health condition. Speaking with the client about a pet’s medical condition and discussing financial issues with the client is a big part of the receptionist’s job responsibilities.
Veterinary Assistant – Our assistants spend much of their day assisting the doctors with various tasks, but there is so much more to the job. Our veterinary assistant staff is highly trained to perform both technical and non-technical work for the doctors; giving the doctor’s more time to spend with the clients. Assistants are responsible for speaking with the clients about preventative care testing, drawing up vaccinations and obtaining blood, urine and stool samples from the patients. They speak to our clients about wellness care, obedience training and any other issues that the client may have concerns about. They are also trained to handle any emergency situation from a trauma situation like a pet that has been hit by a car, to an ill pet that needs diagnostic testing. Training is provided so that our assistant staff is proficient in nutritional care, nursing, pharmacy, radiology, surgical assisting and much more.
Student Kennel Assistant – We offer this position for students 16 and over who are interested in veterinary medicine and want to be team members in a high quality veterinary practice. This job consists primarily of cleaning, stocking and performing other hospital maintenance. Students who work in this position for six months or more and excel in their position may be offered a limited assistant position, which may lead to a full assistant position when they turn 18.
Schedule – Because our Outer Loop location is open 24 hours a day, many local veterinarians are depending on us to care for their clients and patients when they are closed. This means that we see most of our emergency cases in the evenings and on the weekends. To work at Jefferson Animal Hospitals, you must be willing to work evenings and weekends. It is imperative that you be able to work Saturdays and Sundays. Our 2nd shift runs in staggered shifts from 3 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. We try to work around family needs and school schedules for all of our staff. This creates a fluid and ever-changing schedule, so flexibility is valued. New employees may have to wait for up to a year to be put on a “set” schedule. Employees are allowed to swap shifts with other comparably trained staff members if they have a conflict.
At our Fern Creek location, we are open every morning at 7 a.m., and we close Monday through Thursday at 8 p.m. On Fridays and Saturdays, we are open from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. We have day and evening shifts Monday through Thursday, and one full day shift on Friday and Saturday. Even though we are not open on Sundays, we do expect cross-trained staff to be available to work at our emergency location on occasional Sundays.

Pay rate - Jefferson Animal Hospital pays its staff based on skill level. Training is extensive, and there are always opportunities to learn. Those employees who continue to improve their skills are given increases as those skills increase. Training, performance, benefits and salary issues for each employee are addressed during individual bi-annual evaluations.
Training – Training is extensive. You will be expected to read training materials over which you will be tested, watch training videos, and attend training sessions all in addition to working one on one with a senior staff member throughout your shifts for the first 30 days. You will be expected to become proficient in animal restraint, blood collection and testing, radiology, surgical assisting, client counseling and housekeeping. Our training is intense because there is so much to learn. Not only will you learn about disease processes and nursing care of ill and injured animals, but you will also learn about preventative care such as vaccines, dental care, nutrition and senior pet care.
In-House Certifications - Because we encourage all staff members to learn as much as possible, we offer in-house certifications to enable staff to prove their skills and knowledge in areas such as preventative care, lab, pharmacy, emergency and CPR.

You must be a fast learner, a multi-tasker and you must have the customer service skills to take superb care of our clients as well as our patients. You must be able to attend to detail and handle an extremely fast-paced work environment.
Emotional difficulty of working in an emergency center – realize that working at an animal emergency center can be emotionally difficult. Because we deal with severe illness and trauma, we are exposed to death on a daily basis. We work hand in hand with our clients and support them at times when they are faced with difficult decisions regarding their pets’ care. There are many instances when we are with our clients while they say goodbye to a very dear and beloved pet. Providing grief counseling and being able to professionally handle delicate emotional situations is a big part of our job. We also see animals that have been abused, those who are in pain and those who have suffered severe injuries. Employees must remain calm at all times, they must be able to deal with emotionally difficult situations and they must always act in a professional and caring manner.
